Build a Thesis Before You Write the Check
The highest-leverage philanthropists treat their giving exactly like an investment portfolio. They define their thesis. They diversify across cause areas. They track outcomes, not just outputs.
"Good intentions without execution change nothing. The same is true of giving."
I believe the highest-leverage impact I can create is in [cause area 1] and [cause area 2], because [why these areas matter to you personally]. I will focus my giving on [geography or population] and commit to reviewing allocations [quarterly / annually].
Choose 1-2 cause areas where you have: genuine conviction, some relevant knowledge or network, and the willingness to go deep. Spreading dollars thin across twenty unrelated causes feels generous. It rarely produces meaningful change anywhere.
Diversify the Type of Work You Fund
Within your chosen cause areas, fund across three layers. No single layer solves the problem alone, but together, they create compounding impact.
50% Direct Service · 30% Systems Change · 20% Advocacy & Policy
Adjust based on your thesis and risk tolerance. The point is intentional diversification, not perfection.
Impact Measurement Framework
Ask the organizations you fund what success looks like in twelve months, and then ask again in twelve months. This isn't adversarial. It's respectful.
Fill-in-the-Blank Giving Plan
Use this template to formalize your philanthropic strategy. Print it. Revisit it quarterly. Treat it like the investment thesis it is.
I will commit [$X] annually to philanthropic giving, representing [X%] of my annual income / net worth growth. This will be allocated across [number] organizations.
Primary: [cause area]
Secondary: [cause area]
Geography: [local / national / global]
Direct Service: [X%] — [org names]
Systems Change: [X%] — [org names]
Advocacy: [X%] — [org names]
In addition to financial giving, I will contribute: [board service / mentoring / pro-bono work / event hosting / network introductions] to [which organizations].
I will review my philanthropic portfolio [quarterly / semi-annually / annually] and request impact reports from each organization by [date].
