What Every Board Should Be Asking About AI Right Now

Your board is asleep on AI governance. Here's what that actually costs.

The Governance Gap

I sit in two very different rooms. One is the operations floor where teams are deploying generative AI in real time, testing models, scaling experiments, moving fast. The other is the boardroom, where most directors have no framework for overseeing any of it.

This gap is the biggest unmanaged risk in corporate America right now. Your AI is accelerating. Your governance is standing still. That's not a technology problem. It's a board problem.

Five Questions Your Board Isn't Asking

1. What AI is actually running in our organization? Most boards have no inventory. Systems are deployed by teams, by business units, by vendors. You don't know what you don't know, and that's liability.

2. Who owns the output when something goes wrong? When an AI system generates a biased recommendation, a hallucinated fact, or a decision that harms a customer, who is accountable? Unclear accountability breeds bad judgment at the operating level.

3. What's our data security posture when feeding proprietary information to external models? Teams want speed. They're feeding company data into public LLMs. Your legal team should be in a cold sweat. Is yours?

4. How are we measuring the actual business value, not just the hype? Every AI project promises transformation. How many are actually delivering ROI? And how would you know?

5. What's our strategy for AI talent, and what's our plan when competitors hire it away? This is the talent war happening right now. You need a director-level view on retention and recruitment in this space.

The Cost of Silence

"The difference between a company that governs AI well and one that doesn't isn't speed to market. It's whether you're in control when something breaks."

Companies without board-level AI governance end up in one of three places: they move fast and break things (including their reputation), they move slowly because legal and risk are reactive, or they stumble into compliance problems that could have been prevented with one conversation.

Start now. Ask your CEO and CTO these five questions at your next meeting. Demand a framework. Not a committee, but a real governance structure that sits between innovation and risk. This isn't about slowing down. It's about moving fast without crashing.
